STEAC – (Statewide Training and Education Committee)
July 2026 – NWCG Alignment
The PowerPoint presentation referenced above was distributed during this morning’s STEAC meeting.
State Fire Training will also be reaching out to solicit representatives to serve on a committee that will address this issue. As I understand it, SFT is reviewing and removing courses that are no longer relevant or for which it no longer has access to the applicable NWCG training materials.

- Linda helped originally get this started and connect our group with the C-ID team from the Chancellor’s Office. Here is what our proposed goals include: While we had every intention of beginning this project last spring, there were some delays associated with updates to both State Fire Training (SFT) and Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) standards. With many of those updates now available, we are forming a workgroup to begin updating C-ID courses and degree programs for Fire Technology.
We have an ambitious plan, but also a committed team and updated state and national curriculum to help guide the work. Our initial priorities include:
Fire Technology
Update the existing Fire Technology degree, including the six core courses and seven elective courses, with an emphasis on alignment with the National Fire Academy’s Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) curriculum and current fire service standards.
Fire Officer / Company Officer
Update the current Company Officer C-ID courses and degree recommendations to reflect current California State Fire Training curriculum and applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) professional qualification standards now titled Fire Officer.
Fire Prevention
Develop Fire Prevention C-ID courses and program recommendations aligned with current State Fire Training curriculum, including the updated Fire Inspector professional development pathway.
Emergency Management
Develop Emergency Management C-ID courses and program recommendations in collaboration with the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) curriculum.
I led the Company Officer C-ID course and degree development process approximately 12 years ago. During that process, we were provided with templates for individual C-ID courses as well as guidance for developing program and degree recommendations.
Could you please share the initial process for beginning these projects, including any current C-ID templates, submission procedures, workgroup requirements, or other resources we should be using?
We would also like to approach this work with Common Course Numbering (CCN) in mind so that the updated curriculum is positioned to align with statewide efforts and avoids the need for unnecessary revisions in the future.
We are ready to get started and would appreciate any guidance on the appropriate first steps, required documentation, and individuals or committees we should coordinate with as we move forward.
Thank you in advance for your assistance. We are excited to begin this work and believe these updates will provide significant statewide benefit to California Fire Technology programs and their students.
